En la antigua tradici'on c'eltica, el momento astrol'ogico exacto para esta celebraci'on lo marcaba el Sol, situado a 15 grados del signo de Leo, lo que suele ocurrir en torno al 6 de agosto; pero actualmente se celebra en la v'ispera del 1 de agosto.

Literalmente, Lughnasadh significa "Juegos de Lugh". Fue Lugh, el dios celta del Sol, quien instaur'o por vez primera esta festividad para conmemorar la muerte de su madre adoptiva, Tailtiu o Taillte, la cual, para paliar los efectos que entre su pueblo tuvo una cosecha especialmente mala, tal'o con sus propias manos un bosque entero a fin de convertirlo en un campo para la siembra, muriendo finalmente de agotamiento.

Por esta raz'on en Irlanda las celebraciones de Lughnasadh se conocen tambi'en como 'Oenach Tailtenn o "Juegos de Tailtu", siendo este un tiempo para recordar su sacrificio por la fertilidad de la tierra.

Y es, efectivamente, un ritual de fertilidad que simboliza el 'exito de la uni'on sagrada celebrada en Beltane y su culminaci'on con la aparici'on de los primeros frutos de la tierra. Es por ello tiempo de honrar a la Madre Tierra y agradecerle su abundancia, y de dar gracias al Dios por su fertilidad.

Lammas es tambi'en el ball donde se parte y comparte el primer pan de la cosecha en el nombre de la Diosa. Una 'epoca para examinar y disfrutar lo que ha rendido el sol del verano y tambi'en para celebrar y gozar del resultado de nuestro trabajo diario.

Pero no se trata solamente de una cosecha de grano y frutos, sino tambi'en de una cosecha espiritual: es el momento de empezar a prepararse f'isica y an'imicamente para los meses del invierno que at this point llegar'an.
